STOLEN RING RECEIVED.
YEAR'S PROBATION FOR YOUTH
A plea of guilty wa s entered by William Joseph Doyle, aged 19, farm hand, when charged in the Police Court yesterday with receiving a stolen wedding ring, valued at £2, the property of Minnie Houghton. An alternative charge of stealing the ring was withdrawn. Detective-Sergeant Kelly said on July 1 complainant left her handbag at a hostel in the city and later found that a wedding ring was missing from the bag. When questioned by the police, accused admitted that ho had received the ring and had sold it for 4s 6d to a gold buyer. "You have previously been in troublo and if you come before the Court again there is very little prospect of you evading a term' of imprisonment," said the magistrate, Mr. W. R. McKean, to accused, who was admitted to probation for 12 months and ordered to pay £2 4s 6d restitution. A fine of £l, in default three days' imprisonment, was the sentence imposed on Samuel McKay, aged 27. labourer, and Louio Arthur Lute, aged 38, a Niue Island soaman, both of whom pleaded guilty to a charge of being disorderly while drunk. It was stated by Mr. Kelly that when arrested on Monday evening accused wore wrestling outside the Town Hall. •
"A charge of forging the name of C. Ross to a cheque for £22 10s was preferred against Sidney Gordon Ross, aged 22, labourer. On the application of the police, he was remanded to appear at Otahuhu on Tuesday. Bail was refused.
