WORK FOR CANVASSERS.

ORGANISED PLAN APPROVED,

THE CITY AND SUBURBS.

RELIEF COMMITTEE'S SUPPORT,

A proposal In Auckland to organise A number of unemployed canvassers to operate throughout the city and suburbs was discussed by the Auckland Metropolitan Unemployment Relief Committee yesterday, when it was decided to subsidise the funds for the scheme up to £25. The chairman, Mr. Q. Hutchison, said a deputation had waited on him that morning and had asked for assistance in launching the scheme, which would employ from 60 to 70 men. It was proposed that the city should be divided int-o blocks and each of these areas allocated to one of the canvassers. It was proposed to purchase goods for these men to sell, and while making their visits to houses they would inquire whether the householders had any repair work that could be done by other unemployed men. Mr. Hutchison said h© thought it was a worth-while effort. The organiser needed about £SO to start the scheme.

It was pointed out by Mr. W. F. Stilwell and others that there were already, many canvassers operating. There were many who were unlicensed, but other men were paying £1 or 10s for licences, and they would resent any action by the committee which would release a further army of canvassers. Mr. Hutchison said he was impressed by the type of men connected with ;the organisation and he moved that the committee should vote £25 to give the scheme a start. He thought that if 50 men were given employment for six months the committee would be justified in helping. He suggested that the grant should be given in the form of a.pound for pound subsidy on money collected "by the organisation, that none of the committee's subsidy should be used for the payment of salaries, that all bona fide approved canvassers be entitled to admission to the organisation, and that all members be licensed as canvassers. The chairman's motion with the stipulations added was adopted.
