ARRESTED ON STEAMER.
CHARGE OF STOWING AWAY.
MAGISTRATE DEFERS SENTENCE.
Arrested on the Maunganui shortly after the vessel's arrival from Sydney yesterday morning, Bernard Hamilton Watts, a middle-aged man, later appeared before Mr. W. R. McSean, S.M., in the Police Court, on a charge of stowing away. He pleaded guilty. Detective f?prgeant Kelly said accused was found in the second-class smoking saloon of the Maunganui last Priday, a few hours after the ship" left Sydney. He had no ticket nor money. Accused sent a wireless message from the Maunganui to his relatives in Wellington, but no reply was received and the fare had not been paid. The third-class fare amounted to £6 10s. . , 14 Tho money will be paid if I can get in touch with my people," said accused from, the dock. The magistrate deferred passing sentence until to-day to enable accused to communicate with his relatives. Accused was remanded in custody.
