COLLECTION OF ARREARS.
PART REMISSION SUGGESTED.«
A suggestion that Mount Eden ratepayers should be granted a remission of a portion of.their arrears in rates in consideration of prompt settlement was made at a meeting of tho Borough Council last evening. Tho question arose by an offer mado by a ratepayer to pay his arrears, provided the penalties wero withdrawn.
Mr. S. E. Chappell said tho council should consider allowing ratepayers a remission of part of their liabilities on condition that payments wero made by a fixed date;
It was suggested by Mr. J. J. Mulvihill that the period of three years' grace allowed by tho council beforo legal proceedings were instituted against defaulting ratepayers should be reduced to two yoars. The deputy-mayor, Mr. W. H. Nagle, agreed that some action should bo taken to collect outstanding rates. Tho fact that legal costs would bo heavy should not bo overlooked, however. It was decided, on tho motion of Mr. Chappell, to refor tho matter of allowing a remission on arrears "in rales to tho Finance Committee for consideration.
