CALL TO EPSOM CHURCH.
SOCIAL /SERVICE ACTIVITIES
A cull from the Epsom congregation to the Rcv.n J. W. McKenzie, of Port Chalmers, was sustained by the Auckland Presbytery last evening. The Rev. J. A. Thomson, who has boen .moderator of the charge since it becamo vacant on the departure of tlia Rev. Dr. W. McDonald last March, reported that the congregation had been unanimous. Mr. McKenzie's induction was provisionally fixed to take placo on August 11. The varied activities of the Presbyterian Social Service Association were roported on by the Rev. T. Halliday, secretary of the .association. At Avoca House, for tho use of unemployed single men, 300 men had been accommodated since it was established 11 months ago. It was not a free "doss house." The men preferred to pay eightpenca a night whenever possible, and altogether there had been a deficiency of only £2 or £3. During the past month Sister Esther had distributed more than three tons of vegetables and had assisted 1701 persons in various ways. An average of 32 men every morning Jiad received breakfast at 11, Picton Street. A Saturday evening ciub was much appreciated by about 40 boys. Ninety-two boys and girls were being cared for in the Leslie and Oneliunga orphanages. Particulars of a round table conference on the youth work of the Church, to be held in Wellington from August 30 to September 2, were given by the Rev. A. M. Elliffe. He said the personnel would be limited to 50 "key" youth workers, selected from all over tho Dominion. A number of reports for pres?ntation to tho conference were in course of preparation. The application of Mr. 11. S. Scott to be taken on trial for licence for the ministry at the next meeting of Presbytery was granted. Tho Presbytery reappointed as its representatives on the Dingwall Presbyterian Orphanage Trust Board Dr. N. McDougall and Messrs. R. Geddes, J. Dempsey and J. Cuthbertson.
