The Times says correspondence has been published concerning an affair at the French Legation in Dublin,, when two Irish Free State Ministers left on the arrival of the Governor-General, Mr. James McNeill, and the playing of "God Save the King."
The correspondence shows that the President of the Dail, Mr. de Valera, wrote to His Excellency on July 5 saying: "It was unfortunate and regrettable and should not have been permitted. I could not go further than that." Mr. McNeill replied on July 7 that -Mr. de Valera's letter made it necessary to explain that ho had not suddenly become a coward owing to the attractions <?f his honourable office. He added: " You will have no difficulty in finding an honourable
gentleman who will accept my post on conditions he regards as honourable. I shall publish this correspondence failing an apology in three days from yourself and the Ministers concerned."
On July 8 Mr. de Valera conveyed to His Excellency the Executive's direction not to publish the letters. Mr. McNeill replied on July 9 saying that obviously Mr. de Valera and his Executive were the only people in Ireland who thought this honourable. He added: " Only you and your Council will be surprised at my decision to have an apology as an alternative to my removal from office." A message from Dublin states that as the result of the correspondence being released for publication by Mr. McNeill, Mr. de Valera lias notified the Irish newspapers that its publication is prohibited and will be dealt with under the Official Secrets Act.
