OPENING OF SYNOD.

ARCHDEACON SIMKIN'S SERMON,

HAMILTON, Monday.

The Waikato Diocesan Synod _ waj opened in St. Peter's Cathedral, Hamilton, before a large congregation this evening* Evensong was conducted by the lit. Rev* C. A. Cherringtpn, Bishop of Waikato, and the preacher of the synod sermon was Archdeacon W. J. Simkin, of Auckland. _ The preacher said in New Zealand tin day the greatest opportunity was presented to the Church to seek the Kingdom of God. The country was passing through a period of depression following a period of reckless extravagance and false values. Those values were now being adjusted and people wei'e looking for something stable and were turning their minds from earthly to spiritual things. They wer# looking for reality, which the Churca alone could give. The speaker appealed to church peop™ to do what they could for the idle youth of the community and to support .sympathetically Maori These tasks demanded consecration, optimism, faith, courage and deliberate choice. After the service, the synod met 10 the parish hall. Bishop Cherrington piesided and after ho had delivered his charge, bills containing formal amendments to statutes were read a first time*
