INSTRUCTION INTHE SCHOOLS DIRECTION GIVEN TO TEACHERS. That the Education Department does sot agree with tie Auckland Education Board that the question of trading within the Empire is a controversial one best kepi out of the schools mi apparent from the latest issue of thtt Education Gazette, the official orprau of the department, which under the heading,, " Erapire Trade Patriotism," says:— "In their geography lesjsons teachers are urged io bring; prominently before their pupils the nature of the products and manufactures within the bounds of ihs British Empire, and incidentally to show the advantages that are derived from inter-Empire trade. The importance of strengthening the heeds that hold the different parts of the Empire together should be set out- deariy to the pupils, the appeal being raa.de not merely on the ground of sentiment, bat cf common sense. The New Zealand Year Bool: will provide teaches with recent information regarding our exports and imports and the countries we trade with, and a good series of lessons embodying the relation of climate to products and of manufactures to local products, convenience of situation of the manufacturing centre, and matters of similar import can easily be devised by the teacher and made of interest to the "papiis. The department will welcome suggestions from teachers showing how lessons can be treated and grouped round this important aspect of the teaching of geography. 7 ' At its meeting on Jnne 1 the Auckland Board had a letter before it from the Te Aroba School Committee urging that the purchase of Sew Zealand and Empiremade goods should be advocated in the schools, but the board decided that the subject was too controversial for inclusion in the syllabus.
