PEN WOMEN'S CLUB.
Mr. Gilbert Archly, director of the Auckland Memorial Museum, addressed the members of the Penwomen's Club on Fridav afternoon on the subject of "Human Hair and Human Races, the president, Mrs. Carr-Kollett, presiding. The speaker said that the nuin factor-in the classification of the human race lies in the hair. In cold climates the. hair follicles and blood vessels are set deep in the scalp, producing practically straight hair, whereas in hot and humid regions they grow near the surface of the skin for the purpose of throwing off heat more readily. In the latter case, said tho speaker, the follicles aro set slantwise under the skin, producing a kink, or curl. Mr. Archey gave an interesting resume of the migratory period of the people of Central Europe following the ice age, and of the absorption of various races by others. He described the world as a vast stage of mixed races, whose origin might be traced bv the influence of past climate upon the Lair. The speaker was accorded a hearty vote at thanks by Mrs. Carr-Rollett for his interesting aadress.
