Mrs. Matson, of Shanghai, and her husband, Mr. F. Matson, of the Eastern Extension Telegraph Company, have arrived in Sydney en route for Now Zealand on a visit.
Mrs. Frank Wilding, of Christchurch, had been visiting Auckland, is at present the guest of Mrs. Phillip Cooke, of Wellington. She will leave for her home this week.
Dr! Florence Craig (Wellington) has been appointed a house surgeon at tlie Christchurch Public Hospital. Dr. Craig is a daughter of. Dr. G. Craig, Comptroller of Customs, who, accompanied by his wife and anpther daughter, is at present on his. way to Ottawa.
Mrs. W. G. Reid, formerly Miss Kathleen Price, whose home is now in Madras, India, is arriving in Wellington from England by the Rangitiki on Thursday to spend two months with her parents, Mr. W. H. Price, manager of the Wellington branch of the Union Steam Ship Company, and Mrs. Price.
Mrs. Palmer, formerly Miss Rosina Carandini, who was long a favourite concert and oratorio singer, and for many vears acknowledged to be the leading soprano in A.ustralia, died on June 17 at.Melbourne at the age of 88 years. She leaves a son and two daughters. Rosina Carandini was one of a family of singers who justly gained high repute in Australia about 70 years ago. She made many appearances on the concert platform, and was one of the principal soloists m the musical festival held in Sydney in July, 1859.
•An excellent programme of entertainment was presented to the children of the Leslie Orphanage, Remiiera, on Saturday evening by /members' of tho Otanuhu Favourite Concert Party, which has encntertained at many of the orphanages and homes in. the Auckland district. The programme was greatly appreciated. The items were: Conjuring by Mr. J. Eaves; shadowgraphy by Mr. L. laylor; ventriloquism by Mr. J. Rose; concertina trios'by Mess.rs. R. 11. and R. Green, and stories by Sir. J. Howard Andrew., The party was warmly thanked by the matron, Mrs' Halliday.
A very enjoyable afternoon was spent %t tb© Mother's Club of the Y.W.C.A. last week, Mrs. Edwards presiding over a large gathering of members and friends. The guest of honour was Mrs. Mann, president of the club for the past two years. Mrs. Mann was the recipient of a bedroom clock as a token of appreciation for her. many acts of kindness during, her tcirm of office. The following rendered musical and elocutionary items: — Mesdames Foirest, Dickens, Clark, Kasper, Walker, Edwards, Pankhurst, Jones, Wilton, Goldie and Mrs. Walter Smith. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Leitz, Morris and Hawkey.
