GROWING OF VEGETABLES.
Sir, —Individuals, in their own gardens, may be able to grow vegetables cheaply, but under a group scheme eupervised by Government, practically no vegetables could be grown at less cost than they could be purchased either by contract or at tho City Markets. In fact certain lines are sold at less than cost? 01 production. Tho expenses incurred, including c<M of seeds, tools and fertilisers, would buy all the vegetables required. There are more vegetables grown at present than* can be consumed, and these are grown by men who, from experience, are able to cut down the cost of production to its lowest figure. The unemployed should certainly have all the vegetables they require, but these could be purchased for them, and tho people who find most of the money would have the satisfaction of knowing the amount so expended had secured the maximum quantity, grown in the most economical possible. Do any of your readers believe Mr. Coates' scheme would help to lessen tho £3,500,000 materially ? U.K.
