SECONDARY SCHOOLS.

FIRST ROUND COMPLETED. KING'S COLLEGE IN LEAD. The completion of the first round of tha secndary schools' senior grade Rugby competition finds King's College in the lead for the championship in consequence of its victory over Sacred Heart College by 8 points to 0 on Saturday afternoon. The match was played on the King's ground and the winning team did not definitely assert its superiority until the second epell. On the Taknpuna ground Takapuna Grammar and Mount Albert Grammar drew, 3—all. after a dull game. The following table illustrates the positions of the teams in-the competition:— Pts. Ch. P. W. L. D. F. A. Pts. King's . . 4 3 1 Auckland . . 4 2 1 1 39 17 5 Takapuna .. 4 2 1 1 2o 26 6 Mount Albert . 4 1 2 1 20 37 3 Sacred Heart . . 4 VICTORY FOR KING'S. During the first half of the. game between King's and Sacred-Heart both teams had an equal share of the ball and frequently the fullbacks had to clear their lines. A mistake by Shanahan let King's through and Petrie made a fine save, although his clearing kick did not gain much ground. Sacred Heart attacked, a long kick down the line by Lundon pulling_ King's out of an awkward situation. King's repulsed another attack and Sacred Heart was compelled to force. The ball was carried right on to the Sacred Heart line, where, after a strenuous forward tussle, a promising back movement broke down at Macindoe. At the interval neither side hnd scored. After the resumption, except for spasmodic bursts by Sacred Heart, King's did most of the attacking. Eventually came the best individual effort of the match. The ball was passed out to Moses, and, cutting in, the five-eighths evaded several opponents in a twenty-five yards' dash and scored in a handy position for McCarthy to convert. A loose forward rush rattled Sacred Heart, and almost immediately Moses nearly gained another try, but he was pushed into touch a few feet short of his goal. King's sustained its offensive and Archdall led a dribbling rush, which ennbled Featherston to score. McCarthy's kick missed and the game ended-King's, 8; Sacred Heart, 0. Mr. A. A. Lucas was referee. DRAWN FORWARD GAME. The muddy state of the ground caused play in the game between Mount Albert and Takapuna to be confined mostly to the forwards. There was very little incident in the first spell, which ended without score. Following a melee on the Takapuna line a few minutes after play had been resumed several Mount Albert players threw themselves on the ball when it rolled over the line and Solomon was awarded a try, which he failed to convert. After a period of ragged play Mount Albert was penalised and Emery equalised with a good kick. There was no further score, the game ending:—Mount Albert, 3; Takapuna, 3. Mr. C. F, Paull was referee.
