OBITUARY.
MISS EMILY CARROLL. After nearly 50 years of suffering, a patient at the Auckland Infirmary, Miss Emily Can-oil, died recently at the age of 72 vears. When she was 25 years old she" was admitted to the original Old People's Home in the grounds of the Auckland Hospital. Later the Costley Home, now the Auckland Infirmary, was opened at Epsom, and Miss Carroll was one of the first patients transferred from the hospital. Miss Carroll was very popular with visitors to the infirmary, who admired her tatting work. Although many of those at the institution are older than Miss Carroll was, she was the last of the inmates of the original building at the hospital.
MR. JAMES O'REILLY. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HAWERA, Saturday. The death occurred to-day of a n old resident of Hawera, Mr. James O'Reilly, aged 97 years. Mr. .O'Reilly was born in County Cavan, Ireland, in 1835, and left England in 1865 for Australia, eventually coming to New Zealand, where he was engaged in farming in Marlborough. Mr. O'Reilly came to Hawera over 50 years ago, and was the first licensee of the old Shamrock, now the Dominion Hotel. He had been retired for many years. His wife predeceased him two years ago.
