WORK AT NAPIER.
COST OF NEW SERVIOES. PROBLEM!) OF FINANCE. [by telegraph . —own corhesponjjent.] NAPIER, Saturday. The costly nature of the work involved in the reinstatement of municipal services damaged by the earthquake is illustrated in the Napier borough accounts for the year ended March 31 last. The balances ishow an expenditure of £98,153 from the earthquake damage reconstruction account. During the twelve months period two loans, one of £125,000 and the other of £34,700, were raised from the £250,000 set aside for local bodies under the Hawke's Bay Earthquake Act. Only a short time ago it was announced by the Chief Commissioner, Mr. J. S. Barton, that provision of finance for the continuance of the work had become a very serious mutter, and that only by thorough exploration of every possible channel had it been possible to arrange further funds to' avoid stoppage of tho work.
The principal items .of expenditure during the period under review were as fellows: —Sewerage, £53,340 ; water supply, £15,604; streets, £8257; electricity, £5352; reserves, £2159; stormwater drainage,. £1765; removal of debris, £1081; temporary sanitation service, £2966..
