ZOO FOOD.
Some patient people have made out a list of all the food eaten last year in London by that huge family of animals at the Zoo, and some of the quantities mentioned are so fantastic as to give one pretty bad shocks! What do you think of 280£ tons of horse flesh, 288 entire goats, nearly three tons of plaice, 52 tons of herring and whiting, and 2104 pints of shrimps ? A tall order, isn't it?
As you probably know, all the biggest animals in tho world, such as elephants, giraffes, rhinos, hippos, etc., are vegetarians —so it is no wonder that the bill for grain, fruits and vegetables is such an enormous one at the Zoo.
Last year those creatures tlhat like vegetable food ate over 300 tons of grain, 45 tons of vegetables, 8 tons of apples, 5 tons of grapes and raisins, 19,790 oranges and 224,904 bananas!
