EXPERIMENT AT MANAWARU. FARMERS NOT DISCOURAGED. [BY TELEGRAPH. —SPECIAL REPORTER.] TE AROHA, Friday. A statement that an experiment was to be made in exterminating by electricity the grass grub which has devastated part# of Manawaru was made at the welcome to the Governor-General, Lord Bledisloe, and the Lady Bledisloe at Te Aroha this evening by Mr. W. R. Lowry, chairman of the Piako County Council. Mr. Lowry said that Lord Bledisloe had that day seen a devastated area which two years ago was rich pasture. Nevertheless, tlie farmers were not discouraged and were fully determined to overcome the setback. They had an excelie'it pow T er board, the Thames Valley Board, and intended to experiment to see if the grub could be eradicated by electricity. They were confident that by a determined effort they could overcome their problems and were going to face them in a spirit of optimism and determination. In replying to the welcome, Lord Bledisloe said he was stirred by Mr. Lowry't expression of courage in adversity and heartily wished that Mr. Lowry's speech could have been heard by every farmer in New Zealand.
