SUNDAY CINEMAS.
COMMONS PASSES BILL.
STAGING OF PLAYS BARRED
(Received June 30, 5.15 p.m.)
LONDON, June 30.
The Sunday Entertainments (Cinema) Bill was read a third time in the House of Commons by 146 votes to 56. An amendment to permit theatres in any district to be opened on Sundays for the staging of plays was defeated. During the debate a new clause was moved on behalf of the Government providing for 5 per cent, of the sum earmarked for charity out of the profits of Sunday performances to be transferred to a cinematograph fund to be established under the direction of the Privy Council for the purpose of encouraging the use and development of the cinematograph as a means of entertainment and instruction.
