DEARER SUGAR.

INCREASE OF £1 A TON.

WHOLESALE RATES ALTERED.

An increase of £1 a ton in the price of sugar is announced to-day by the Colonial Sugar Refining Company, Limited. All grades of raw and refined sugar, except tablet and icing sugar, are affected by the increase, although the prices of golden syrup and treacle remain unchanged. From to-day the new prices of sugar are:—Brewers' crystals, £22 5s a ton; No. 1 coarse grain, £2l 10s; No. 1A fine grain, £2O 15s ; No. 2 soft, £2O ss; No. 3 yellow ration, £l9 ss; caster sugar, £1 4s a cwt.; invert sugar, £lB 15s a ton. The rates ruling previously were introduced on May 14, when a reduction of 10s a ton was announced. Prior to that alteration, a reduction of £1 a ton was announced on April 15. The preceding change was on September 21, 1931, when an increase of £5 a ton was announced, following an increase in customs duty imposed on July 30.

Before the additional duty was introduced No. 1A sugar, the popular grade for table use, cost £l6 5s a ton as a result of a decrease announced on June 12, 1931, that being the seventh reduction in wholesale prices since April, 1930.
