WEAK CIRCLE PLAY.

ST. LUKE'S BEAT MOUNT EDEN

Except for occasional flashes the standard of play in tho match in which St. Luke s defeated Mount Eden by 3 goals to 0 was mediocre. Both teams suffered from lack of finish in tho circle, the strength of the St. Luke's defence being the deciding factor in the game. After a short St. Luke's attack the Mount Eden forwards advanced into tho circle, a shot by Jones going astray.. McLeod sent tho St. Luke's van away, a fine chance being lost when N. Burnett sent tho ball high over the net. Play was Shifted to the other end of the field by Fletcher. Tho St. Luke's defence stood firm and the position was relieved when T. Clark cleared to W. Burnett. Tho ball was sent across tho field to Brown, who raced down, to the circle. Mount Eden was hard pressed and finally Grace, receiving a pass from tho rit-'hi, took the ball on the full and sent a fast shot' into the net, St. Luke's again attacked. Vipond doing good work for his van. With the. ball practically in the goalmouth, a score seemed inevitable. Mount Eden's goalkeeper made fine saves, but St. Luke's was not 1o be denied, and after a close tussle in the circle E. McLeod saw his chanco and scored St. Luke's second goal. Ash and Fletcher combined in a fast run, which took play to the other end, but Mount Eden was unable to break through, and the spell ended with the score:—St. Luke's, 2; Mount Eden. 0. Up and down play occupied the first few minutes of the second spell, both circles being invaded several times. W. Burnett shot fast, Oliver making a good save. Horspool raced down the wing, but F. Clark blocked him, and N. Burnett led the forwards down the field- Oliver stopped a shot, but McLeod, who had followed \ip. caught tho rebound and scored St. Luke's third goal. Play ranged up and down the field. St. Luke's was unlucky when a shot by X. Burnett struck the post and glanced outwards. Mount Eden was bottled up for a considerable period, but the St. Luke's forwards missed chance after chance through wild shooting and lack of circle combination. Tho final score was:—St. Luke's, 3; Mount Eden, 0. Messrs. R. C. Avery and A. Playle were referees.

WESLEY OUTCLASSED. . SOMERVILLE'S EASY WIN. Wesley was outclassed by Somerville in a ragged frame. Somerville's victory by 5 goals to 0 being the result of continued pressure in the Wesley circle. Although the score was largo, Somerville's circle play was erratic, and there should have been at least twice, as many goals. Nearly a dozen shots were eent wildly over on to the side of - Wesley's net and several others were saved by the goalkeeper, Trenwith. Both teams started short and later filled vacancies with substitutes for the regular members.' After a period of . even play, Seccomne started a movement which Wellbourne carried on to .th.e. Wesley circle, where he scored with a fast shot. Somerville kept up pressure and after close circle play Seccombe seized an opportunity and beat the bully. The Wesley territory was again invaded. Fleet doing good work in keeping the ball out of the danger zone. Somerville was awarded a penalty bully whien a run by Seccombe was blocked by A. M. Burton. The Wesley back cleared the ball, but Somerville was soon back in the circle. Strenuous defence saved .any further goals before half-time, the- score being:—Somerville. 2; Wesley, 0. The Somerville forwards raced away from the bully and, a few minutes after the spell benran E. Watts, securing the ball near the half-way line, made a fast run down the field and scored Somerville's third goal. Trenwith. who -was playing a good game, made several'saves and the Wesloy forwards at last shifted play to the other end of the field. Dunn and Kiff were making useful advances, but the forwards bunched, and the -chance was lost.' Somei-viHe took up the offensive again and Wellbourne scored Somerville's foyrth goal with, a clever shot 'to the coi'ner of the net-.-' Wesley cntild not keep the opposing-. van for long out of the circle. After a 'fast flank run, Smytlieman finished off with a' fast shot, which found the net. Somerville continued to press, but several wild shots were sent over the net. After a. lengthy period of circle play, Seccombe sent a pass to E. Watts, who. sent the ball into the net, but the shot' was disallowed. The final score was:—Somerville, 5; Wesley, 0. , Messrs. G. E. Waddingham and A. Williams were referees. .
