ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL.

SENIOR GRADE* CONTESTS. THISTLE BEATS NORTH SHORE. FINE CONTEST WITNESSED. Keen competition and fast football marked the continuation of the Auckland Football Association's senior championship on Saturday. The weather was fino and the grounds were in good condition. A fine and exciting struggle resulted in the meeting of Thistle and North Shore at Blandford Park ( tho former gaining victory. Y.M.C.A. claimed tho points in tho match with Tranutrewa at Walker Park, whilo Onehunga was in surprising form and easily defeated Ponsonby at Onchunga. Another surprise characterised tho Glen Innes-New Accord encounter, in which tho former, maintaining its form of tho previous week, secured a well-earned victory. Following wero tho results:— Thistle, 4; North Shore, 2 Y.M.C.A., 3; Tramurewa, 1. Onehunga, 4; Ponsonby, 1. Glen Inries, 3; Now Accord. 0. A stirring contest marked the mooting of Thistle and North Shore at Blaiulford Park, the former gaining victory through its more thrustful forward lino. Neither team settled down sufficiently to make the early exchanges particularly interesting, but the Thistle forward lino, backed up by Balloch and Wright, was tlio first to show up dangerously. Woods, McLeay and liislop made a thrustful attack which Smith, the North Shore goulkceper, v.'a 3 called on to repulse. Shortly afterwards an infringement was ruled against a North. Shore back just clear of the area. McCosh took the kick and crashed the ball into the net clear of the North Shore goalkeeper. Corbett sent Elwell away in a characteristic sideline run and the wing, reaching the flag, had a fine opportunity of crossing to Leonard in the centre, but dallied and w;as robbed. Leonard, with Eush trailing in support, went through the. Thistlo defence again, and moving out to tho left centred accurately. Elwell was on tho spot to head accurately, but Gerrard effected a fine save. Thistle was now attacking more strongly, and Wood, moving under Hislop's guidance, went past tho North Shore backs and lobbed the ball on to McLeay's head, for the last-named to 6coro a pretty goal. North Shore made determined efforts to reduce the deficit, and just prior to tho epell a swinging pass from tho centre snw Jerriin move up quickly and net. The half-time score was:—Thistle, 2; North Shore, 1. Thistlo caught North Shore, napping on resuming, tho latter having no time to settle down before a couple of finely-conceived movements brought results. Williamson pushed through determinedly and passed to Ctunmings, who in turn connected with McLeay, for the last-named to register tho first goal. A tricky run by Wood made the way for the second goal, a misunderstanding between Gill and Smith allowing Williamson to dash in and score. North Shore now camo into its own, and must have equalised the score but for li lamentable lack of finish among the forwards. Leonard was an exception in this respect, several fine drives by him being only stopped by Garrard's agility and fine anticipation. The game was being hotly contested at this stage, many exciting rallies raising enthusiasm. Leonard scored from a penalty, and then tho North Shore forwards camo back determinedly and hammered away at the Thistle goal. The defence- was in splendid form, however, and. with Gerrard keeping in a brilliant fashion, the siege was withstood, tho game ending with the score:— Thistle. 4; North Shore, 2. Mr. E. Parkinson was referee.

GLEN INI7ES SUCCESSFUL. DEFEAT 01' NEW ACCORD. Glen Innes. was in good form in defeating New Accord on its own ground in n sterling contest. The ball went about freely at. the start, both teams making proguess, only to meet with strong opposition from the respective defences. Better combination saw the New Accord forwards dangerous, the ball travelling between Galloway, Duubmoro and Haycock in nice fashion, but the raid was well checked by R. Stone. Play returned to the Glen Innes goalmouth, where the backs were hard pressed iti relieving. Then a long clearance saw Flashman and llitchens making ground for Glen Innes on the left. It was Glen Innes' turn now to storm the New Accord goal, and a prolonged attack culminated in J?. Welch scoring after a faulty clearance by the New Accord goalkeeper. This reverse spurred New Accord, and Dtmsmore figured in a sparkling run which broke down just when n, goal seemed imminent. Glen Innes came again, but Reid and Bleckley defended determinedly and the invaders were repulsed. The speii ended with the score:—Glen Innes, 1: New Areord, 0. Shock tactics, which almost yielded result, were exploited by New Accord on resuming. the ball being swept swiftly to the Glen innes goalmouth, whero a series of itielees had the Glen Innes backs defending strenuously. On several occasions fine opportunities appeared, but there was no New Accord forward to finish off. Galloway almost forced his way through, but was sent back by weight of numbers, and then Glen Innes retaliated quickly,_ Glaister and R. "Welch transferring play in a clever run to New Accord territory. A corner-kick, well placed by Hitchens, yielded result. Brown driving home a. first time shot. New Accord figured prominently in the subsequent exchanges, but the Stone brothers and Warren kept the attackers at bay. Then Glen Jnnes swung back. Glaister cutting in sharply on the right to score. Over the concluding stages New Accord made valiant efforts to register, but the game ended with the score:—Glen Innes, 3; New Accord, 0. Mr. T. M. ]ln nib rook was rofereo.

WIN FOR Y.M.C.A. TRAMUREW A DEFEATED. Y.M.C.A. got tho better of Tramurewa in a. rugged contest at Walker Park. The opening exchanges were keenly contested, with Tramurewa showing the better combination. Jay and A. Hunter made progress on the Tramurewa right, the attack appearing dangerous until checked effectively by the Y.M.C.A. last lino of defence. ■ Christie, getting possession, ushered his forwards upfield, and then connected with Hamilton. The last-named indulged in a pretty interchange of passes with Tliomes and Chalmers, but when the ball camo back to Hamilton he missed with a snap shot. Ross was supporting the Tramurewa forwards Well, who now began to make good progress with a number of pretty movements which endangered the Y.M.C.A. keep. Y.M.C.A. took the lead when Chapman received from Humphreys and scored and tho samo forward, in a subsequent attack, again registered. Kay supplying: the opening on this occasion. Y.M.C.A. was in the ascendahcy to tho spell, when the score read: Y.M.C.A., 2; Trnmurewa, 0. McMillan .and Spencer initiated several pretty movements for Tramurewa on resuming, tlie forwards, as a whole, working in a manner which gave the Y.M.C.A. backs considerable trouble. Spencer almost burst through on two occasions, being stopped more by luck than judgment. Cowie was having a fairly hard time in the Y.M.C.A. goal, but was handling low, hard

drives from Spencer with A; Hunter eventually got through to J urewa'e first goal. The exchanges from now on became fast and vigorous, with rewa striving despcratelv to \ i KJW . phreys put the issue beyond dou ■. f a ii e d ever, with a low shot wlncli BaUy tr e" to field properly, the ball c /' oss f l en Y.M.C.A. held the upper hand fr ° V n le on. the final whistle sounding -with tlie score: Y.M.C.A., 3; Tranmrewa, X. Mr. B. Riekard was referee.

OIIEHTJNGA SURPRISES. VICTORY OVER PONSONBY. • Onehunga. after several disappointing displays this season, surprised by defeating Ponsonby in the contest at Onehunga. lon sonby showed up prominently in the early exchanges, its forwards displaying' better combination than that of its oppocnts. lho Onehunga defences were equal to the strain, however, and tho Onehunga quintet, headed by Woodhall, was seen in a retaliating move which also broke down on reaching Stewart. Midfield play followed, neither forward line making much progress. Onehunga figured in a series of smashing raids which Watson, Potts and Stewart did well lo hold but, nevertheless, Onehunga should have gone ahead if the shooting had been tip to standard. Ponsonby. in a suosecjnent onslaught on the Onehunga goal, also displayed weakness in front of the Innes and Forrester worked hard, but their efforts were not productive. Onehunga took the lead as a result of Gill accepting a rebound and netting. The half-time score, was: Onehunga, 1; Ponsonby, 0. The ball was flashed about in delightful fashion on resuming, but the respective defences held in the face of pretty forward movements. Onehunga allocked strongly and Dick sent the forwards foraging in an incisive movement which almost yielded vcsult. Woodhnll had a tfood opportunity but was just blocked bv Watson when a goal seemed likely. Grant sent Whimster and Whaley away. Forrester and Diamond offering good support, but the Onehunga backs, by powerful tackling, discounted their opponents' finesse A pass from Huston let Woodhall through to scoro shortly afterwards. Dick, with a good shot, increased Onehunga's lead, and then of Ponsonby, reduced the deficit. F. Z u ill added another goal just prior to the Hose to mako tho final score: Onehunga, 4; Lonsofiby, 1. Air. A. Firth was refereo.

Offside play lost South Auckland a goal after a strong_ attack, and a littlo later the. ball iust skimmed the bar on two occasions. Shepherd and Corrigan were prominent in a North Auckland movement which gave Qunstall an opportunity, but his shot struck the bar and C'rabb cleared. Immediately after half-fimo the* home team attacked on the left wing, where, after an exchange of passes between Bate and Cavaye, the firstnamed centred to Liddle, who scored a great goal. Sou'.h Auckland missed further chance.3 whan a header by Latimer and a misplaced kick by Liddle went over the bar. The visitors gained tlie lead soon afterwards when Queripel scored from a, scramble in front of 1 lie goal. In spite of desperate efforts by South Auckland the bell sounded with no further score, the game ending:—North Auckland, 2: South Auckland. 1.
