BETTING IN HOTEL.
CHARGE OF BOOKMAKING. FINE OF £7 10s ON LABOURER. A plea of guilty was entered by Percy James McCabo, aged 41, labourer, when charged in the Polico Court on Saturday with carrying on the business of a bookmaker. Detective-Sergeant Kelly said accused was arrested by detectives in a Newmarket hotel on Friday morning. He had been betting in the hotel, but only in a small way. Three years ago he was convicted of a minor gaming offence. Leniency -was asked for by counsel, who said accused was an honest working man with a wife and family to support. The magistrate, Mr. E. C. Cut ten, S.M., said ho would not inflict a heavy fino in view of the fact that money had increased in valuo and accused had not been before the Court for some considerable while. Accused would be fined £7 10s, in default one month's imprisonment. Ten days would bo allowed in which to make payment.
