LAND SPEED RECORD.
departure delayed.
NEW WINDSCREEN FOR CAR.
STRONGER MOTOR NEEDED. A decision to postpone his departure for the Ninety-Mile Beach for a week, on account of difficulty in obtaining a sufficiently powerful electric motor to drive the revolving windscreen of his racing car, was reached by Mr. Norman Smith after final tests of the apparatus had been carried out at four o'clock on Saturday morning. The apparatus itself proved highly satisfactory, remaining perfectly clear when a stream of water was directed at the glass under pressure. It was considered, however, that a stronger electric motor was needed, and as it was impossible to obtain a suitable one and instal it in the short time available before the auxiliary vessel Motu, by which the car was to have been shipped, left for Awanui North, Mr. Smith decided to postpone his departure until next Saturday morning.
During the week a motor of tho correct typo will bo fitted and coupled to the flexible drive to the revolving screen, and further exhaustive tests will be made to ensure that no defect will ocur during an attempt.
