PASSION FRUIT.
Sir,—An interesting article with tM ring of truth and reason appeared in your columns on this subject on April 6 and your issue of the Bth contains 3 re to Mr. Ntale's remarks. Presumably, the reply has some object other than estnhlishing the inconsistency of a man who has left the country and lacks the oppor* tunity of immediate reply. One might reasonably assume that the reply ainis at vindicating the soundness of the industry. It" this is so, then it might well have dealt with some concrete facts, instead of leaving the reader to deduce conclusions from alleged former remain* of Mr. Xeale and the hopes of others. Many Xew Zealanders will be anxious to take £l5O from each acre of land-" in point of fact. lam myself—and 1 would like to know (a) Ha* anybody yet achieved this and banked his profit, (b) has any firm of undoubted financiju standing and experience overseas definitely contracted to purchase supplies from 113 at 10s or more a gallon, and is the contract open for inspection? I imagine that there are many people who want to know irt connection with this industry no what will be, what would be, what nu' : be or what is expected; but what i s - Ixexfeiuekced. It was stated yesterday bv an -And*" land firm engaged in the passion n"' industry that there have been examp- 1 of the sum of £l5O having been ta from an acre of land. One examp quoted concerned an area of two a J K .f frotn which 3000 cases of passion " 111 were taken in the 1930-51 season and so on the New Zealand market. A ne^. 1 , | turn of os 3d a case was made, equal , the sum of £-187 10s. In regard to | tlie question of overseas orders for P^ sl j. | fruit, an offer from Mr. H. A. ' £ representing Pure Juice Products, 0 | don. for 20,000 gallons of fruit ju' ce w Tq g received by cable on January 6. - | contract was made, however, owing | the fact that a special machine 0 | installed for the freezing of the juice \ not ready and the order could no met. Negotiations are in hand at pie_ « to supply passion fruit juice in us r | condition to the East, through a j ping company interested in develop! freight trade between Xew Zealan j the East.
