CLOTHING AND BOOTS.
MEN IN RELIEF CAMPS. EX-SERVICEMEN'S SUGGESTION. The difficulty that unemployed men, particularly those drafted to camps, have in providing themselves with boots and clothing was emphasised at a meeting of ex-servicemen held at Glen Eden. It was pointed out that from the balance of earnings after paying for food, the men had insufficient with which to acquire clothes, while many of the men from the city were equipped only with shoes or light boots, which were unsuitable for country work. It was suggested that more substantial boots could be had cheaply if funds were made available, and it was unanimously decided that the Unemployment Board should be asked to make a weekly allowance, to all men on relief work sufficient to enable them to acquire clothes and boots.' The meeting comprised ex-servicemen from New Lynn, Glen Eden, Henderson, Swanson, Waitakere, Titirangi, Oratia and Nihotupu. Mr. R. W. Wise presided, and supporting him were Sir George Richardson, president of the Auckland Returned Soldiers' Association, Mr. E. H. Sharp, secretary, and Mr. A. J. Routlev. chairman of the Glen Eden Town Board.
The object of the meeting was to consider the question of forming u subbranch of the Auckland Association in Iho districts mentioned, and after the chairman, Sir George Richardson and others, had spoketj and placed the whole position before those present, it was unanimously decided to form a sub-branch but. to leave Waitakere district out, the men from there at some later date to form an association ticxt-door going further north. The meeting was most enthusiastic, about only 50 per cent, of the men being unemployed.
