ARREST OF BRIDE.
FEW HOURS AFTER WEDDING. CONVICTION FOR VAGRANCY. A woman -who was charged in the Police Court on Saturday with being deemed an incorrigible rogue, having been convicted previously as a rogue and vagabond, was arrested several hours after her marriage on Thursday, and spent her wedding night in the police cells. Counsel entered a plea of not guilty on behalf of the woman, Elsie Clare Pender, aged 34, but said the facts were admitted. He said the woman had married a haitfl-working man, who lived in the country, although she had previous convictions. " My client was celebrating her marriage when she was arrested," the solicitor added, in suggesting that no conviction should be made and the woman given an opportunity. The woman was said by Constable Mahood, in evidence, to have been under observation for some time and her conduct was worse than that of two other women who had been charged that day with vagrancy. She had ignored warnings and had been associating with some of the worst women in Auckland. Detective-Sergeant T. Kelly informed the magistrate, Mr. E. C. Cutten, that tho accused had asked for a chance, on the grounds that she was going to be married, on a previous occasion, but tho best thing would be to allow her to go into the country with her husband. The woman was convicted and remanded until April 7 for sentence, the magistrate saying the charge would not be carried further if the woman took out a prohibition order and left for the country.
