SHORTS FOR THE SPORTS GIRL.

WILL SHE DARE AT WIMBLEDON? Women have taken up squash rackets, one of the favourite games of the Prince of Wales, with enthusiasm, and they have also taken up many varieties of masculine dress. The odd thing was that at Queen's Club recently where the championships are being played, every player seemed to be suited by her costume. A considerable proportion of the women players were in shorts, such as runners wear; others wore trousers, and a few wore skirts. To wear- shorts in this game is an extremely sensible idea . It is an exceedingly fast game, and the impact of the ball on a " flowing " skirt may mean the giving away of a point. Whereas the lady in shorts enn hardly give away a point—for there was nothing " flowing " about those shorts. They were—well, closely connected with the figure. By general consent the most charming costume was that worn by a girl with a cerise singlet, close-fitting khaki shorts, no stockings and light shoes. And, what is much more important, she played very well indeed. I spoke to the women of different, attire afterwards,-and here are flieir replies. A Girl in Skirts: Oh, the dress makes no difference. A Player in Trousers: 1 think trousers are a good half-way measure. A Girl in Shorts (and very pretty shorts): Shorts for me every time. I can move more 'freely. Another player offered to make a sport ing bet with me. She said: " What odds will you lay me that, women do not appear in shorts on the Centre Court at, Wimbledon in the lawn tennis championships this year ? I made a bet—and I expect I shall lose. For I think they quite probably will.
