Tho New South' Wales Legislative Assembly, after a long sitting, passed through all its stages a bill to amend the Companies Act in such a way as to protect preference shareholders by providing that ordinary shareholders are not to disposo of a company's assets without tho consent of tho preference shareholders. Tho Premier, Mr. Lang, said the bill would be. retrospective in order to enablo shareholders in Smith's Weekly (who, he alleged, bad been badly treated in connection with tho sale of the Daily Guardian) to institute legal proceedings for the recovery of their money.
