NEW BRITISH CONTRACT. DISAGREEABLE IMPRESSION. Times Cable. LONDON, March 17. The Times, referring to the timber contract given by British firms to Russia, says the deal produces a disagreeable impression. The exploitation of*convicts and political prisoners under which Russian timber is cut and transported causes a widespread impression that it should be completely prohibited. There is natural resentment, says the paper, at such a huge contract, which will damage the British Columbian and Scandinavian industries, and adversely affect the British balance of trade with Russia, which already is lopsided.
