FIFTY YEARS AGO.

EXTRACTS FROM THE HERALD. AMALGAMATION WITH THE CITY. The following are extracts from the New Zealand Herald of March 20, 1882: Whether or not the notice of motion by the Mayor, Mr. Clark, meets with success he deserves credit for attempting an amalgamation of the various municipal bodies into which Auckland is unfortunately split. The City Council at present consists of eight members, excluding the Mayor who contemplates, by the inclusion in the city, of Parnell, Grafton, Newton, Karangahape, Archhill, Ponsonby, Eden Terrace, and possibly a portion of Newmarket, an increase of 10 councillors. His proposal for a loan to extend water supply, and the efficiency of drainage in the districts, is practical and cannot but exercise a favourable influence on the localities whose union with the city is suggested. Jem Mace, the pugilist, gave an impromptu exhibition of his skill in W e "" ington. He noticed three men attacking another outside an oyster saloon in the city, and three scientific taps by Mace were sufficient to settle the assailants. It was not until after he had gone that the luckless wights realised who had interposed. Major Clifford Lloyd, resident magis trate in Counties Clare, Limerick and Cork, has brought to the knowledge of tile authorities the existence of a spread conspiracy in his district. The trouble about the land laws in Ireland continues without abatement, and the sudden orders to the 53rd Regiment to proceed there may have been caused by the news from Clare, Limerick and Cork. There is no doubt thai arms have been smuggled into Ireland to a considerable extent.
