LONDON LEADING IN STAMPS.

London has now become the acknowledged centre of the world's trade in rare postage stamps, business in Paris and Berlin, which were formerly its rivals, having fallen off very considerably. Stamps can be very valuable, and the amount spent at London stamp auctions in one year is about £500,000.

Four stamps were recently exhibited in London worth, between them, no less than £50,000. These were the one cent British Guiana stamp, which was sold for £7750in 1922, and is now probably worth about double that amount; two copies of the famous penny Mauritius on the original envelope, and the companion twopenny. The story of the Mauritius stamps is interesting. They were engraved by a local watchmaker for the Governor's J*' I*® 1 *® to frank an invitation to a ball. That was in 1847.
