UNEMPLOYMENT CAMPS.
SYSTEM NOT POPULAR. COUNTY COUNCIL'S PROBLEM. There are at present approximately 1000 men engaged in unemployment relief works in the Waitemata County. Reporting to the County Council yesterday, the engineer in charge, Mr. L. F. Faram, said he had been able to commence only three relief camps o\ving to the diffidence of the men in accepting work under the conditions laid down by the Unemployment Board. It was understood, however, that the board was now prepared to compel the men to go into camps, and this being the case the council should have no difficulty in obtaining the required quota. Mr. Faram said ho had submitted to the Public Works Department a long list of road-metalling works which could be put in hand under the department's relief scheme. He anticipated that at least some of these works would be carried out during the coming winter. The department had also been approached in connection with numerous requests made by farmers that a " creeks in the county should be cleared of willows, and it was hoped that a gang of men would shortly be put on this work. Owing to the plant required it was not possible for the council to profitably undertake this work. BIRKENHEAD ACTIVITIES. BOOT-REPAIRING DEPOT. A boot-repairing depot is to be established next week by the Birkenhead Unemployed Association. Members will benefit by having repairs done for the cost of tho material.
