NOTES ON THE RUNNING. DEFEAT OF GOLD COUNTRY. [BIT TfcLEGRAr'ir.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday. J. S. Shaw brought off a big surprise when Guy Pares won the Improvers' Ham dicap. He gave away 72 yards, but with most of tho others breaking he was soon in a good position. The young trotter finished on well, but was all out to beat the favourite Modern Girl, who finished very fast. The winner paid a good doublefigure dividend. Investors were again astray in the Bel-' fast Handicap, won by Princess Thea, who also paid a good dividend. The winner was always in a good position and fairly outstayed Gunfire at tho finish; Jean Drusus, the favourite, was never dangerous.

Gold Country was a good thing beaten in the Denton Memorial. Ho lost ground nt tho start and half-a-mile from home ho was last, Then he put in a great run and was noon fourth. Royal Drusus, with all the best of the running, hung 011 long enough to beat Gold Country by a neck. Wilbur White had every chance, but failed badly, being beuten in the run home by Location.

On Parade, a three-year-old pacer by .Travis Axworthy, put ut> a fine performance in the Eclipse Handicap and won well. lie led all the way and was never seriously troubled. Special Sun wont a fair race and so did Eureka Boy. and, but for interference Lord Leslie would have done better. The winner is above the average.

Headlight was at a short price in the Dash Handicap and although all out at the finish ho put up a smart performance.. Aristotle is on the improve and the best of the others was Rokerili., Quincey .Thorpe won the Autumn Handicap after a mixed display of galloping and trotting. Ho lost no ground by his frequent breaks und was lucky to escape a, protest. First Wrack Vent badly und Edith Voyage was never dangerous. Morrison won tho Flying Handicap like n good one after being well placed all the way. Real Girl finished wcU, but Brentlight was badly interfered with. Pageant d'Or al6o met with interference.
