TO-DAY'S RACES.

TE AROHA MEETING.

fine fields engaged.

herries , cur contest.

PETER JACKSON • FANCIED.

Quantity 3s well as quality is represented in thi? fields for the opening of the Te Aroha Jockey Club's meeting to-day and the prospects for keen racing are particularly bright. The good stakes offered by the club have proved a great, attraction to owners and it is fitting that the club's enterprise in this respect should I have drawn the best horses in Auckland in addition to sonic good performers from southern stables. The course is in first-class condition and fine weather is all that is required to ensure the success of the meeting. Following are the details of the fields, with a review of the prospects in each race by " Archer " :

11.50- RUAKAKA HURDLES. Of £175; about li miles. st. lb. st. lb. Luminary ... 10 7 High Finance 9 0 Standfast . -.10 5 Mia Stella . 9 0 Cargen .... 10 3 lm. Prince . 9 0 Patutahi ... 910 Principal . 9 0 Airticht ... 9 5 Arcade .... 9 0 To Homai . 9 2 Biform ...90

Bracket : 'lmperial Prince and Principal. On recent form Standfast. Mia Stella and Cargen should account for most of the others. They have all won lately and the running at Te Rapa this week suggests ihat there will be very little between them with the weights they have to curry today. Luminary's latest efforts have not been up to his best standard, but. if he happens to strike form, he will not be out cf it. Airtight should be capable of a solid effort with liis handy weight and the likeliest of the remainder may be Patutahi. Te Homai and Principal. Solid support may be extended to STANDFAST. CARGEN. MIA STELLA. 12.35—WAITC'A HANDICAP, " Of £l5O, and £3 sweepstakes; 7 fur. st. lb. St.. lb. Abbey Dream 812 Illuminelli ..80 Aga Khan ..86 Dark Marble . 8 0 Roseric ..*BO Desert Star . 8 0 Red Sun ... 8 0 Arch Ruler . 8 0 Free Air ... -8 0 Mahkill ..80 Aga Khan most unlucky when he was beaten at his last start and lie should have excellent prospects of opening his winning account in this race. Arch Ruler, who shaped creditably in stronger company at Ellerslie, is another with a good chance end the best o/ the others may be Dark Marble, Desert Star, Illuminelli and Mahkill. The favourites may be AGA KHAN. ARCH RULER. DARK MARBLE.

1.20-JUVENILE HANDICAP, ■ Of £"00; tivo-year-olds; 5 fur. st. lb st. lb. Tea Trader .10 '2 Master Musk 7 0 Gaine Hauwiri ... 7 0 Carrington . 8 2 Good Run ..70 Te Waipu . . 712 "Whirlalong . 7 0 Master Brierly 7 7 Senorita ... 7 0 Sea Ruler . 7 2 Roman Mascot, 7 0 Greek Gold . 7 2 Mungatoon ..70 Holly Lu . . . 7 2

Brackets: Master Brierly and Master Musk. Holly Lu and Greek Gold. On past form Tea Trader is a claFs above the others, and, although he ha 3 a big v.-eight, he will be very difficult to beat. His chief danger may come from Gaine ■Carrington, who von at Trenthain last month. aad is an improving colt likely to do much better. Quite a, number of the others have shown some form, and. with the light weights they have Mo carry Sea the light weights they have to carry. Sea Ruler, Greek Gold. Holly Lu. Hauwiri and Whirlalong may all provide some opposition for the topweights. The main fancies may be tea' trader. GAINE CARRINGTON.

The form of the candidates is well exposed, but /the race bears a very open aspect. Antique and Pegaway are bound to run good races ill spite of their big weights and they may be better prospects st the distance than Volimond. Paganelli and Chief Joy, although Chief Joy will be very dangerous if he can run it right out. Arikira is an improver who has won at three of his'last four starts and form suggests that lie will be very difficult to beat. Peter Jackson has been running consistently good races in important handicaps and must have a good chance here, while the best of those lower down may be Royal Doulton, C'hjef Jewel. Alloy and Bronze Tray. Horses likely to be solidly supported aro . PETER JACKSON. ARIKIRA. PEGAWAY.

There are some smart hacks in this field tnd there are many with chances. Gnnpat and Karangapai ma ' prove best, of the topweights, aqd of those near tho 8.0 mark Instalment, Luval, Alpina and Exaggeration are as likely as any. Snow Lap. Lady Musk and Lucidus are lightweights with good prospects and Normauby is a southerner whose latest efforts have been encouraging. Horses likely to comnmnd Rood support are INSTALMENT. ALPINA. ' LUVAL.

llero is an array of finJ sprinters and the if-Bno i? very open. Paganelli should no ■w.oll if started here in preference, to ihe cup. hut at the difference in weights he v.ill receive strong opposition from horses like Huntingdon, Gold Day. High Conied.v. Cay Lap and Green Linnet. Huntingdon and Gold Day both make a strong appeal, but on Te Rapa running wherever Gold Day in High Comedy should not bo far •way. There are a few possibilities among the lightweight? and the best of t.hcsip may be Kiik Ford and Cluomadyne. The popular fancies may be HUNTINGDON. gold day. GAY LAP.

Bracket: Bronze Tray and Cay Idea. Heremia and Speedmint are good three-year-olds likely to take a. lot of beating, and under the high weights Heremia may be the better prospect of the two. Bronze Tray is in good form, but his stable unite. Gay Idea. who has been improving with racing, may have a better chance at the weights. Great Emblem, King's Knave. Grand Talk and L'Allegro are improvers with handy weights while the best form of Valmarie, Attentive, Dominican and Don't Lap also entitles them to serious consideration. Solid support may be given to HEREMIA. SPEKDMINT. KING S KNAVE. S.IO—HOT SPRINGS HANDICAP, Of £200; 1 milo. st. lb. at. Ih. I Chief Joy . . 9 8 High Finance 7 6 I Taneriri ... 0 1 Imp. Prince . 7 0 j Cold Day ..87 Gay Idea ..70 j Punri Park . 8 3 Lucess .... 7 0 I Eager lioso . 8 3 Glenstar ... 7 0 Baroscope ..80 Cruachan ..70 liager Rose's run in the Storey Memorial ! Cup indicated that slio is coming right back to form aild she will run a merry milo with 8.3. Puriri Park, with the same weight, should also make a bold showing. Chief Joy. if reserved, will have a chance with all his weight and others who should be worthy of some consideration are Baroscope and Cruachan. Gold Day would have bright, prospects if started, but his mission will most likely he the sprint. 11l the absence of Gold Day and Chief Joy. the favourites may bo EAGER ROSE PURIRI PARK. BAROSCOPE. SCRATCHINGS POSTED. Scratchings announced for the first day of the Te Aroha Jockey Club's meeting are as follows: Herries Memorial Cup.—Eager Rose. All Engagements.-—King Colossus, Haulbowline. Gray will ride Huntingdon, as it will depend on what weight he will be able to do to-day. However, if Gray can ride at 8.0, ho will be Huntingdon's pilot. TURF IN AUSTRALIA.
