£IOOO FOR WORKHOUSE MAN.

24-YEAR-OLD DEBT PAID. A letter lately went from Philadelphia to England addressed: "John Latham, c.o. The Workhouse, Barnstaple. Devon." It contained a cheque for 3598 dollars, which is approximately £IOOO at the present rate of exchange. This cheque is in settlement of arrears of pay earned 24 years ago from a man who employed Latham as his coachman Mr. Latham, who has been in the workhotiso with his 10-year-old son for five years, explained that he was at one time employed by Mr. Charles W. Mayer, of Philadelphia, as a coacli-horn blower. After a time Mr. Mayer got into financial difficulties, and Mr. Latham left his employ with £6OO wages owing.
