THE CIVIC LEAGUE.
WORK FOR COMING YEAR. Matters of public welfare to he worked for in the coming year were brought forward at a meeting of (he Civic League held yesterday afternoon. The president, Mrs. Kenneth Gordon, presided. Among these were the consideration ot meisures that will lessen the risk to life .and limb at railway level crossings, the fatalities in this direction being far too numerous. A proposal was brought forward that ledges in telephone boxes might be installed. At the present time people with parcels have nowhere hut the floor on which to deposit, them when using the telephone. It was also suggested that more stringent measures should be enacted in regard to motor-cycling. Fnr too ninny accidents were taking place through excessive speed, as well as through riding without. lights, and it. was further considered that pillion-riding, as conducted under present conditions, should be made illegal. A proposal that, the annual subscription he reduced to 2s 6d per annum, with a donation of 3d made by each member at each meeting to the league funds, was referred to the annual meeting for consideration. It was announced that a garden party was being held next, month in connection ■with the Mayoress' War Memorial Library League and members decided to assist with a stall under the joint management, of St. John Ambulance and the Civic League. In discussing the effects of undesirable films upon young people, the president expressed the opinion that incalculable harm was being done to them. through > .this medium. "Our young people are precocious and intelligent," she said. "We are cultivating brains without character and abilitv without the latter is ruining our world."
