DAIRY MARKETING.

NORTH AUCKLAND SCHEME.

CO-OPERATIVE ASSOCIATION. FORMATION OF NEW BODY. [BY TELEGIt.VPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WHANGAREI. Friday. A conference was held in Whangarei to-day of representatives of all dairy companies in North Auckland. About 70 delegates were present and the meeting was to consider the recommendations of the committee of tlie North Auckland Dairy Conference, which had been set up' to go into the question of group maiketing of North Auckland dairy produce. Mr. W. Grounds presided. Mr. Grounds said the conference was called for the specific .purpose of considering the question of co-operative marketing." The most pertinent question in the minds of the dairyman was the disparity of the relative prices of Danish and New Zealand butter, and lie thought the principal factor in the question was the splendid marketing system of Denmark. Mr. Grounds said all North Auckland dairymen were convinced of the lined of the proposed organisation, and it was only a question of ways and means. The remission ,of commissions at present paid to agents in England would be made available to the proposed organisation and this would pay all expenses of running. Loss of Goodwill. " It is ridiculous to call ourselves cooperative dairy companies and then to fight among ourselves," said Mr. J. H. Stubbs, Northern Wairoa. " The haphazard method of marketing butter has destroyed whatever goodwill we had in England, and Denmark has gained a substantial goodwill." Mr. E. S. Tremaine, Whangarei, said he was opposed to the formation of a new body and he considered the North Auckland Dairy Conference, given wider representation and in conjunction with the Dairy Control Board, could carry out efficiently the marketing of produce. Mr. T. Ellis, Hikurangi, said he was opposed to the proposed pooling and said the reason for the Danish success was that Danish butter was sold in England within a day of being made. In replv to u question, Mr. Grounds said the Dairy Control Board would do all the functional work in marketing, but would not take over any directional work in the proposed new association. Mr. Grounds proposed that an association be formed to be called the North Auckland Dairy Produce Co-operative Marketing Association, Limited.

Defeat of Amendment. Mr. Tremaine moved as an amendment that the present North Auckland Dairy Conference, in conjunction with the Dairy Control Board, was able to undertake any business entrusted to it in connection %\ith pooling and marketing. The amendment was defeated, the representatives of Hikurangi, Whangarei, Ruawai and Maungatapere voting, for it, and Maungaluroto, Port Albert, Kaikohe, Kaitaia, Springhead, Whangaroa, Waipu, Bay of Islands, Northern Wairoa and Hokianga voting against it. Mr. Grounds' motion was then carried. The question of local sales was left with the respective companies. Some delegates 'to the conference did not have power to commit their companies to join, and in consequence the secretary was instructed to send a copy of the resolutions to those companies for their consideration and reply. The conference will meet again .in Whangarei on March 22.
