A GRADE CHAMPIONSHIP.

PORT NICHOLSON'S SUCCESS

The Town Hall was packed to-night when the A grade bands played the second test selection in the New Zealand champion band contest. The championship, awarded on points gained in the first and second test pieces and the musical points of the quickstep, was won by the Port Nicholson Band, which was second in the first test, second, equal, in the second test and first in the musical points of the quickstep. Woolston. which won both test selections, lost the championship by a poor showing in the quickstep. "The bands in this contest generally were good," said the judge, Mr. J. J. Kelly. "There is, however, a marked difference between the standards of the A and B grade bands, but if the B grade bands follow in the track of A grade they will bo all right." A Grade points were awarded as follows:—Port Nicholson: Quickstep, 76; first test, 138; second test, 140; total, 354. Woolston: 71, 140, 141; total, 352. Wanganui Garrison: 73, 135, 140; total, 348. St. Hilda: 74, 133, 138: total, 345. Wellington Tramways: 75, 132_, 137;,t0ta1, 344. The B grade band championship, decided at the band contest last evening, was won by the Oamaru Municipal Band, with an aggregate for the two test pieces and quickstep music of 312 points. The Hastings Citizen Band was second with 309 points, and the Nelson Garrison Band and Llic Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve band were equal, third, with 305 points.
