FIFTY YEARS AGO.

EXTRACTS FROM THE HERALD, INSTRUCTIONS TO FIREMEN. The following are extracts from the New Zealand Herald of February 27, 1882: A notice has been posted to the »ffect that firemen, when proceeding to fires in future, must not go on footpaths, but must keep to the road, and must proceed at no speed greater than 5 miles per hour, go as to prevent accidents. 'The order is the result of ar. inquiry by the Courvil m respect to the accident to Castain Jones, who was knocked down by the hose reel as the brigade was proceeding to a recent fire. Of course the result of the order will be that the attendance of the brigade will not be as prompt on. the scene of a fire as they have hitherto been, but they will, on the other hand, have the advantage of not being out of breath when they arrive there. The directors of the Wellinglon-Maiift-watu railway intend to make a second local issue of shares to the extent of £50,000 before placing the enterprise on the London market. Mr. Spurgeon and the members of the Wellesley Street Baptist Church a r e to be congratulated on the splendid sitt that they have secured on which to er :ct- a chapel. The new site, which is at the junction of Upper Queen Street -and Karangahape Road, was secured for the sum of £3200. It is the intention of the committee to erect a stone or brick edifice. Owing to the growth of population in the Mount Albert district, the Wesleyans of the locality are also about to erect a new church more in harmony with the progress of the place. The old building will be removed to another part of the allotment and used as a schoolroom.
