AFRICAN CRICKETERS.

AUCKLAND TEAM BEATEN.

MARGIN OF SEVEN WICKETS. SECOND INNINGS COLLAPSE. DISAPPOINTING EXHIBITION. The match between South Africa and Auckland wfjs concluded at Eden Park yesterday, the visitors winning by seven wickets. Auckland scored 342 in its first innings and South Africa replied with 374. The local batsmen collapsed in their second innings and were dismissed for 134. South Africa required 103 runs to win and had little difficulty in making this total tor the loss of three wickets. Conditions were again good and Auckland's showing in the second innings was extremely disappointing. It was a repitition of the team's displays in Plunket Shield matches this season. After overnight rain the wicket, although covered, was a little soft at one end, but it by no means could be held responsible for Auckland's collapse South Africa's innings was completed after 32 minutes' play yesterday morning 22 more runs being added. This made the total 374, which had occupied 322 minutes and gave the visitors a lead of 32 on the first innings. Allcott secured the last two victims, including Mitchell, who added but one to his overnight score of 122, not out. Cheap Wickets. Mills and Frater opened Auckland's second innings, the last-named being caught in the slips off Brown after making a single. I—l—l.1 —I—l. Mills did not last much longer, being caught off Quinn at third slip. 32 —1. Vivian and Weir set about to retrieve Auckland's bad start and McMillan was soon brought on in place of Quinn. Runs came more freely, both batsmen making nice placements and running into doubles. Once Vivian stopped a delivery from McMillan with his pads, the ball trickling on to the wicket but failing to dislodge the bails. The next delivery, a full toss, Vivian sent over the fence in front of the Stand. Just prior to the luncheon adjournment both Vivian (27) and Weir (28) lost their wickets, caught off Christy. The total at the interval was 63 for 4 wickets. Postles and Allcott opened on resuming to the bowling of Christy and Dalton. The batsmen proceeded mostly in singles and at 73 Christy gave way to Brown and Quinn came on at the other end. Postles, by nice placements, was first into doubles, cutting Mitchell, who had replaced Quinn, for a brace. Quinn went on at the other end. Postles, who had looked likely to stay, lost his wicket to Quinn, the batsman snicking a ball to first slip. 99 —s—lß.5—18. Meanwhile, Allcott was baiting nicely and when joined by Bverlev brought the hundred up with a single after 104 minutes. Byerley attempted to hit Mitchell right from the start, but did not " connect" well. He hit the middle of the fence with one shot and was then clean bowled in the same over. 112—6—8. Matheson jumped light out in an attempt to hit Mitchell, missed, and was easily stumped. 116—7 —0. The Third " Duck."

When McCoy joined Allcott Quinn was spelled in favour of Brown. Mitchell clean bowled McCoy, who also failed to score. 116—8—0. " Cleverley made the third " duck " in succession, being clean bowled by Brown. 117 —9—o. Associated with Rowntree Allcott commenced to hit out at Mitchell, but lost his partner, who was caught off the slow bowler. The innings, which had occupied 149 minutes, realised 134. Requiring 103 runs to win the match South Africa opened its second innings with Mitchell and Christy at 3.30 p.m. Matheson and Weir took up the attack. Christy played nice all round shots and soon reached the twenties. Weir, two overs, gave way to Allcott just prior to the tea adjournment, the score then being 22 for no wickets (Christy 19, Mitchell 3).

Christy continued to play freely on resuming against the bowling of Matheson and Allcott and quickly ran into the thirties, while Mitchell was scoring more quickly than on the previous day. Fifty appeared after 32 minutes' play. Christy lost his wicket in attempting a forcing shot off Matheson. being caught by Allcott at point. 55—1—31. Viljoen again failed to get a start, Frater faking a fine low catch at second slip off Matheson. 55—2—0. A succession of five maidens was broken when Mitchell got a single off Allcott. Allcott caught and bowled Balton next ball, this being the first delivery the batsman had received from the left-hander. 56 —3—o. Cameron Starts Well. It did not take Cameron long to start and he once hit Matheson for two fours in succession. Mitchell reached the thirties by placing Allcott for a four and a three. The pair had little difficulty in notching the required runs, Cameron making the winning hit with a four to square-leg off Matheson. Mitchell made 44 not out and Cameron 24 not out.
