HISTORIC TRANSACTION.
200 ACRES FOR 12 AXES.
The first deed of sale of land in New Zealand was dated February 24, 1815, and is therefore 117 years old to-day. This historic transaction took place between the pioneer missionary Samuel Marsden, acting on behalf of the Church Missionary Society, and the Maoris of the Bay of Islands. To obtain a site on which to establish a mission Marsden purchased 200 acres of land at Bangihoua for 12 axej, and it was on this area that the original mission was founded.
