SPORT OF CYCLING.

CONTESTS IN AUCKLAND. H. R. DWIGHT IN BEST FORM. Owing to the postponement on account of rain of the Papatoetoe Amateur Athletic and Cycle Club's meeting last Saturday the only cycling competitions decided during the past week were the evening races conducted by the Auckland Centre of the New Zealand Cycling Council, and the recently-formed Elierslie Amateur Athletic and Cycle Club. The. Auckland Centre conducted two events at the Auckland Domain grass track. The one mile handicap drew an entry of 28, while 25 contested the two miles race. With such big fields, necessitating several heats, it was approaching dusk when the last event, was run off. The centre has now decided to conduct only one handicap event at future mid-week meetings this season.

H. K. Dwight, the Manukau Club's champion, rifling from scratch, won the two miles race without any apparent exertion in the good time of 5m 5 2-ss. Dwight is rifling at the top of his form at present, and should be prominent at the championship meetings. Last season's junior road champion, A. W. D. Robinson, off 65yds, beat an old and experienced rider in F. J. Casey when he, finished second to Dwight, in the two miles race. Robinson has quickly accustomed himself to grass track racing. F.. D. Andrews, 90yds. won the oiip mile event, after staving off a strong challenge fi'om C. Johnson, 100 yds, the promising Auckland Club rider. Riding from the 20, yds mark, F. «T. Casey won the one mile event conducted by the Ellerslie Club at. its grounds. Casey first raced in 1924 and is now riding better than ever. At. the 1927 Dominion championships he represented Auckland in the three miles event, which was won by R W. Lamb, the Victorian wheelman, who is now performing with merit be hind motor-pace.
