WANTED TO GO TO GAOL.
« ONLY WAY TO GET WORK." MAN WHO BROKE WINDOW. A statement that he had broken a window in order to be sent to gaol, for the purpose of obtaining work, was made by an applicant for a variation of a maintenance order during the hearing of his case before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court yesterday. In the course of his statements from the witness-box, the man said he had not been successful in securing employment, and added that he had recently completed a term in Mount Eden prison.
"Why were you there 1" asked the magistrate. "I broke a window," the applicant answered. "It was the only way I could get work." The magistrate pointed out that, were the man to repeat the practice, he would serve a longer term in prison. In view of the applicant's present circumstances, the magistrate agreed to suspend payments under the order as requested.
