PLUNKET SHIELD.
WELLINGTON WINS TROPHY.
OTAGO NARROWLY BEATEN. MARGIN OF TWO WICKETS. A DRAMATIC COLLAPSE. [BY TEI.EUItArH. —rr.ESS ASSOCIATION.] DUN ED IX, Tuesday. The Plunket Shield match between Wellington and Otago was concluded today, Wellington winning by two wickets. Considering that with eight wickets down foi 248, Wellington had a first innings lead of 39 over Otago at the end of the .second day's play, it was thought that Lowry would declare and endeavour to ..force an outright win by getting Otago out cheaply in the second innings. However, although only ono day was left, the Wellington batsmen carried on and made 12 more runs in about 20 minutes, bringing the score to 260. . Otago in the second innings made only 108, due chiefly to the excellent bowling of Newman, who took live wickets for 45. He had the batsmen tied up, and they could do nothing with him. Requiring only 60 runs to win the match outright, Wellington opened with Dempster and Dustin, but a dramatic collapse was brought about by the magnificent, bowling of Dickinson, who was right oil his day. Assisted by the coach Badcock, ho got in among the Wellington men, and at one stage had five wickets for ten runs, finishing with five for 23. Wellington, however, was able to wipe off the deficit with two wickets intact, and thus won the Plunket Shield for the season. Scores: — OTAGO. First Innings • . 211 - *. ' Second Innings.
