AUCKLAND WEEKLY NEWS.

TO-DAY'S PUBLICATION. SPLENDID PICTORIAL SECTION. WEALTH OF ILLUSTRATIONS. Famous throughout the world for its remarkably fine illustrations the Auckland Weekly News consistently maintains its proud position as New Zealand s national pictorial journal. The current number, on sale to-day, worthily upholds the splendid reputation enjoyed by the Weekly News both at home and abroad. In an issue notable for many excellent pictorial features the centre doublepage is outstanding. It admirably illustrates the scenic grandeur of the lake and mountain country in the north-west of Central Otago. This series of exceptionally interesting photographs was secured during a recent summer holiday trip. For the variety of beautiful scenery the district is second to none in the world. Given special prominence on the frontispiece are spectacular photographs taken at the Manawatu Agricultural and Pastoral Association's annual show at Masterton. Two comprehensive views of Shanghai, a centre of fighting in the Far East between Chinese and Japanese forces, make another extremely interesting page. Attractive summer holiday scenes show many pleasing glimpses of popular beaches in the Auckland district. A leal gem of photographic art is an example of the work of Captain Frank Hurley, who accompanied Sir Douglas Mawson s expedition to the Antarctic during the past summer seasons. This is one of an exhibition of Mawson Expedition photographs now being displayed in the main cities of New Zealand. Generous space is also given to the visit of the new 19,000 ton liner Mariposa on her maiden voyage from America to Auckland. The entertainment of visiting New Zealand Press Conference delegates in Auckland is also well illustrated. A wealth of interesting news, scenic and travel pictures, secured both in New Zealand and overseas, will be found on the miscellaneous pages. The great diversity of the subjects can be imagined from the following list of some of the more outstanding illustrations Keen racing at Dunedin; the Avon River deepened by means of a weir; Whangaroa Harbour seen from the hills; a great African elephant charging a photographer in the wilds; weddings of note; yachting at Wellington; Waikato beekeepers' field day; children's health camp opened at Otaki; Poverty Bay floods; New Zealand swimming championships; fatal Victoria bush fires; veteran bowlers of Otago.
