SPEED IN OPERATION.
CASE OF VESSEL'S SURGEON.
QUICK RETURN TO SHIP.
Less than five hours after he had been operated on in a private hospital for acute appendicitis, Dr. Scarborough, chief consulting surgeon on the Matson Company's new liner Mariposa, was back on the vessel, where he will convalesce during the remainder of the Mariposa's round-the-Pacific cruise.
Late on Sunday night, Dr. Scarborough's illness was diagnosed as acute appendicitis aud an immediate operation was ordered. Ho was removed to a private hospital, where, at 1 a.m. yesterday, Dr. Casement G. Aickin, operated. In view of Dr. Scarborough's* desire to rejoin the Mariposa, it was deemed inadvisable to give him tho usual anaesthetic, that supplied being such as to deaden the senses for the operation and to permit the quick recovery of the faculties.
The operation was successful and when the patient was ready the St. John Ambulance was ordered and he was reembarked on the Mariposa at 5.30 a.m. When the vessel sailed at seven o'clock Dr. Scarborough was as well as could be expected under the circumstances. Under normal conditions, it is usual to allow at least two days before a patient who has undergone such an operation is moved.
