CHIEF JOY'S NARROW WIN. SPRINT EVENT TO GOLD DAY. Close finishes wore ;i feature of tlie opening of the Waikalo "Racing Club's Meeting at Te Rapa yesterday, when there was some highly interesting racing. A strong breeze was blowing but, the weather was fine and the course was in perfect I condition after the week-end rain. Notable among (lie exciting finishes was the contest, for the Storey Memorial Cup, which was won by Chief Joy, who scored by a head from Royal Artist. Chief Joy's win was well anticipated and lie started a good second favourite to Pegaway, who finished a close third. The sprint event, tho President's Handicap, fell to the favourite, Gold Day, who just got up to win from High Comedy. Tho attendance was only fair and speculation ou the tolalisator foil away considerably. Tho turnover for tho day amounted to only £8575, compared with £19,816 10s on the first day last year, a decrease of £11,441 10s, or 57 j_>or cent.
