FIFTY YEARS AGO.

EXTRACTS FROM THE HERALD. TENSION IN EUROPE. The following are from the New Zealand Herald of February 21, 1882: In spite of the difficulties between Russia and Austria there will be no war, because Germany will not permit it, because Russia cannot fight Austria without France as an ally, and because France cannot be that ally with Italy allied to Austria and Germany. General Skobeloff, for his utterances in Paris in favour of Russia's engaging in a war with Germany, is certain to be disavowed by 'nis Government. The Germans are associated with the Austrians, not because of any love for that nation, but, because they fear Russia and France. Recently Germany has closely identified herself with the interests of 'Jurkey. We find German officials being Jippointed to important posts under the Turkish Government, the object being to counteract Russian influence at Constantinople. War can conceivably loom. If so, Russia will not be the instigator, but Prince Bismarck, who desires £o deal with Russia. News from various parts of the country throws a somewhat doubtful light on Tawhiao's recent visit to Auckland. From Patea and Murimotu it is said that the Maori King recently sent emissaries there asking the natives to place all their lands under his hand. At first glance this would appear to be a reassertion of kingism. When Potatau was king, the great chiefs of the southern part of the North Island gave their lands into his charge to prevent sales to Europeans. _ Perhaps it is impossible to fathom the mysteries of Maori diplomacy. Probably the Native Minister, Mr. Bryce, will take the question up at his forthcoming meeting with Tawhiao. It is a pity that the Maori king should give any occasion for distrust.
