RUDYARD KIPLING.
SIXTY-SIXTH BIRTHDAY. Mr. Rudyard Kipling, who was 66 on December 30 last, is growing less Iviplingesque in appearance. Ilis famous eyebrows, says the London diarist of the Evening Standard, arc not so much in evidence—though those of Sir Arthur Pinero, who is ten years older, are as characteristically aggressive as ever—and he is very grey. The writer says:—"l saw him in the foyer of a theatre not long ago—appropriately enough it was a play oi poetry and jintriotism —smoking a cigarette, alone and unrecognised by most. But Mr. Kipling still is a much-sought-after guest for week-end house parties, including IJoyal paities, for not long ago lie was staying at Balmoral. 1 wonder how many people are aware that the Poet of Empire has another name in addition to Rudyard. Mr. Kipling's school poems were signed ' J.R.K.' Ho occasionally, in early days, used the pen name ' Yussuf," which points to 1 Joseph.' The name, in fact, is Joseph."
