CINDER TRACK RACES.

THREE RECORDS BROKEN. A. MATTSON'S FINE RIDING. , CONTESTS WITH T. FARNDON. Three records were established at the Western Springs Speedway on Saturday evening. The racing was the fastest and most interesting seen at the speedway this season, T. Farndon, of England, and A. Mattson, the New Zealand champion, being the most outstanding competitors. The Australian rider, V. Huxley, again failed to attain his best, his disability apparently being due to the slowness of bis machine in comparison with the speed of the motor-cycles used by the other prominent performers. Huxley showed great skill in handling his machine, but rarely did he appear as likely to defeat Farndon and Mattson, both of whom gavs first-class performances. Mattson's riding was in every way splendid. The Auckland competitor delighted his supporters by breaking his own local record of 19s for one lap, his new time being 18 4-ss. Apart from being a record for Western Springs, the time also is faster than the New Zealand record of 19s, made by W. Kiimister, of Wellington, at the Kilbirnie Speedway. Five clocks were on Mattson during the attempt. Three recorded 18 4-ss, one 18 3-5s and the other 19s. The Aucklander also had the distinction of winning the International Match llace contest from Farndon and Huxley. In the first two rounds Mattson obtained excellent wins, qnd he was second to Farndon in the third round. Mattson twice covered the course in the extremely fast time of lm 18s. In the second heat of the Big Twelve Handicap, Farndon put up a brilliant performance by establishing the record time of lm 22 l-5s for a standing start, winning the event off a handicap of 60 yards behind. Some exciting racing was seen in the heats of this event, the final of which was won by Mattson. The machine of his most serious competitor, Farndon, failed. I'arridon's riding was impressive. On one occasion his machine left the track and broadsided on the grass, but Farndon carried on in the race after regaining control. The English rider's time of lm 17 2-5s for four laps from a rolling start was another track record. The results are as follows: INTERNATIONAL MATCH RACE.

First Round.—A. Mattson, New Zealand (J.A.P.), 1; T. Farndon, England (J.A.P.), 2; V. Huxley, Australia (Rudge), 3. Farndon had the advantage of the start and rode excellently on the inside of the track. His position was disputed hotly by Mattson, who secured the lead at a corner and went on to win by a narrow margin in fast time. Huxley was not able to challenge his opponents. Time, lm ISs. Second Round.—A. Mattson, 1; V. Huxley, 2. Mattson always was in command of the race, but Huxley, showing an improvement, nearly wrested the lead by fine cornering on two occasions. Farndon crashed, but was not injured. Time, lm 18s. Third Round.-—T. Farndon, 1; A. Mattson, 2; V. Huxley, 3. Farndon took the lead at the first bend and Mattson at no stage was able to get ahead. Huxley, who was riding C. Goldberg's J.A.P., again could not attain his best form. Time, lm 18 4-ss. CHALLENGE RACE. First Race.—T. Farndon (England), 1; V. Huxley (Australia), 2. The winner's lead was in danger on no occasion, his competitor's machine failing. Time, lm 17 2-ss. Second Race.—T. Farndon,. 1; V. Huxley, 2. Huxley had the • dvnntage of position, but Farndon made lepeated attempts to shoot ahead. Both men rode wheel to wheel for two laps. Farndon rode on to the grass at a corner, but, recovering well, he took the lead and won easily from the Australian, whose cycle slackened speed again. Time, lm 19 l-ss. RESERVE MATCH RACE. W. Coyle (Norton), 1; B. Smith (Norton), 2; H. Tetley (Rudge), 3. Although badly placed at the start, Coyle early obtained the leading position, which he held iri the face of challenges by Smith, to win by eight lengths. Time, lm 225. BIG TWELVE HANDICAP. At the Kilbirnie Stadium on Saturday splendid raring conditions prevailed. An unsuccessful attempt on the four-lap flying start track record of 76s was made bv W. Kilmister. ' The first lap was done in 18 3-ss, a one-lap track record, the second lap in 19 l-ss, the third lap in 19 l-5s and the fourth lap in 19 3-ss, a total of 76 2-ss. The outstanding performance at the broadsiding meeting on Saturday evening was Case's attempt on the mile record.
