MILK VENDOR FINED.
11 DELIBERATE CHEATING." COLOURING MATTER USED. ! 'I look on the, artificial colouring of milk as deliberate cheating." said Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., in the Police Court yesterday, when Percy Johnson, a milk vendor, was charged with colouring milk by means of annatto and also with selling milk containing less than 3.25 per cent, of butter-fat. Accused admitted both charges. The inspector said the low percentage of fat in the sample taken might have been due to the milk not being stirred. The charge of colouring the milk, however, was the first one of its kind for eight, years. Counsel said the colouring matter was inocuous, being used to colour butter and cheese. The magistrate said he considered the first charge serious, as people buying richlooking milk expected to receive the genuine article. Accused was fined £5 on the first charge, and £2 on the second.
